Jaynee gasped. How could she not? “What do you mean, I doom us all?” Somehow she knew—knew with absolute certainty—that whatever he was about to tell them would change her life, would force her to do as he wanted.

She watched as he straightened in his chair, looked from her to Lucan and back. “If we don’t perform the mating ritual on the night of Savar’s full moons, then our mating, our true binding will never be complete. Not only will we never link as we are meant to, completely, soul to soul to soul, but having any children of this union will be an impossibility.”

Pain shafted through her at the knowledge that children might not be part of their union. Always, in the back of her mind, she’d hoped for children, a home. She rose, took a step toward Dare, feeling his pain as though it were her own. Behind her, she heard Lucan’s chair scrape back as he too made to rise. Apparently, neither she nor Lucan could handle seeing the crushing blow her words had wrought on this strong man.

Reaching out to him, Jaynee ran her hand down his face, using her touch to soothe the pain away. “Talk to me, Dare. Tell me what’s going on.” She turned her head, saw the worry in Lucan’s eyes and with his slight nod of encouragement, she dropped to her knees in front of Dare. She laid her hands upon his clenched fists, trying to soothe away his tension, his pain. “Tell us,” she pleaded, needing to understand, to make things right.

Dare raised his head, looking at her through haunted eyes. So much pain and weariness shadowed his face. “There are some things about the Savar that you need to understand, some things that might shock you.” He looked over her shoulder. His concentration now centered on Lucan, who, had at some point, moved to kneel behind her. Luc placed his hands on her shoulders, a solid presence to lean on if she needed it. She didn’t know how she knew that’s why he was there, but she did. She’d have to think more on that at a more appropriate time. “Shock you both, actually.”

Behind her, she could feel Lucan stiffen. Waves of tension and anger seemed to emanate from him. Was Dare talking to Lucan? Was he keeping something from her? At the thought that either man would purposely withhold information from her, something inside her snapped. She’d be damned if they’d treat her like she wasn’t an equal outside of the bedroom, and best they learn that now.

“Will one of you please tell me what is going on? I don’t like you talking behind my back. In fact, all you’re doing is pissing me off, and an angry witch is not a good thing.”

They must have sensed her outrage because as one they moved to wrap their arms around her, cocooning her in their warmth, making her feel loved and cherished. How could she stay
